Western Slope Laboratorybegan operations in 2003 for the sole purpose of testing oral fluids for the presence of drugs—of all kinds.
In the beginning, court systems as well as private employers utilized the laboratory’s services due to the availability of Western Slope’s proprietary saliva collection device and utilization of Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry in sample analysis. The collection device does not produce instant results, but is aimed at enabling sample collectors to obtain samples easily for purposes of full lab testing. Western Slope continues to provide testing in this manner today.
Services were expanded in 2006 to include confirming the results of instant-result drug testing kits and analyzing urine samples for the presence of alcohol metabolites (EtG and EtS- one of only 3 labs in the USA to do so). Both services have provided Western Slope with significant growth opportunities and the company is committed financially and operationally to taking advantage of these opportunities. Sample volume has increased steadily each month from these market segments. Western Slope is likely the only laboratory in the United States (certainly of those providing toxicology services) with 5 LC/MS/MS machines. Our equipment includes: Quattro Micro LC; Waters Ultima LC; Waters QTOF LC and an ICP mass spectrometer. Essentially, Western Slope houses research quality instrumentation, hence our tag line: Research Quality Laboratory Services for the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry.
Also, we are likely the only laboratory in the United States that does not screen prior to using our LC/MS/MS. We don’t have the chemicals to screen and we don’t own the equipment to screen – every sample is tested directly by the LC/MS/MS. Additionally, Western Slope tests from the instant kit itself and does not require more sample to perform confirmatory testing—this is break-through technology in the drug and alcohol testing industry.
Western Slope is also one of very few laboratories capable of confirming the results of oral fluid instant results kits. In addition to providing this service to many Third Party Administrator (TPA) organizations, we have begun providing this service in conjunction with instant result kit manufacturers and distributors. This service bundling approach is likely to gain acceptance in the future and Western Slope will lead the way with testing accuracy, reporting convenience and customer service-centric diagnostic testing services. Our laboratory also tests urine samples for drugs and alcohol.
